Today’s featured song: J.E.S.U.S. by Leon Patillo from the 1984 album The Sky’s The Limit.
This is the second song by Patillo in this set from Tape JM-31. Like the previous one, it is not spiritually deep, but is just a fun song, almost like a cheer. It’s got a catchy tune, and I like it! Listen and cheer along!

Today’s featured song: Mr. Jonah by Bobby Dee & The Scam, a 45 rpm record from 1984.
Track 23 on Tape JM-31 is a fun song, one that was quite unusual to hear on Christian radio stations. The story I relate here was researched for Jerry Bryant’s Full Circle Jesus Music radio show, specifically on episode #148 (which you can find on this page); I cannot locate info about this anywhere else on the Net. This track for a short time in 1984 actually went to the #1 spot on Christian stations in some markets. The creator of the song, Bobby Dee, was an overnight DJ on WZZD, a Christian station in Philadelphia.
Bobby Dee got the idea one night to do a take off on the “break-in” music sampling records that had been popularized in the 1960s and 1970s by Dickie Goodman. Goodman used brief clips taken from popular records of the day to use as answers to questions that he as an interviewer asked of people in various situations. The first time this was used was in June 1956, with The Flying Saucer Parts I & II. Over the years, Goodman did many of these records, using political and pop culture as his inspiration, and they were popular novelty records.
Because he felt the radio format he had to work with was a little stuffy, Bobby Dee decided one night to make a recording that worked just like Dickie Goodman’s records, but using cuts from the popular Christian music songs of the day. He used the scenario of interviewing Jonah about his experience in the belly of the whale. He put it together, and played it one night.
When the general manager of the station heard about what he had done (people were calling the station to request the “song”), he was promptly fired for straying outside of the recommended play list. However, so many people called to ask it to be played again, the station re-hired him. Dee did a more professional recording of Mr. Jonah, and this got wide airplay. I do not know if any other such break-in music sampling record was ever done for Christian music after this, but I am glad that I had the opportunity to hear and record this from KCRO in Omaha, back in the summer of 1984.
Since it has no lyrics, what I will list below will be the titles and artists of songs that are used in this unique record.
When You Gonna Wake Up – Bob Dylan
I’m Saved – Carman
I’m Not Religious, I Just Love The Lord – Scott Wesley Brown
We Are Persuaded – The Bill Gaither Trio
I Have Decided – Amy Grant
Mourning Into Dancing – Leon Patillo
Pray For Me – B.J. Thomas
Givin’ It Up – Fireworks
So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt – Keith Green
Alive Again – (not sure who this is)
America (In God You Used To Trust) – David & The Giants
I Threw Away My Idols – Dion DiMucci
He’s Returning – White Heart
Take A Stand – Glad
Today’s featured song: Tell The World That Jesus Loves Them by Michael Card from the 1983 album Legacy.
On Tape JM-31, I included not only songs I recorded off the radio, but also sometimes did music that I took off a vinyl album that I had purchased. This was a great little song done by Michael Card (interesting that I had him start both sides of this tape, as this is the first song from side 2, and side 1 opened with his song, Love Crucified Arose, from the same album).
Tell the world that Jesus loves you
Tell them you’ve found a forever friend
You’ve opened up your heart’s door to Him
The love of Jesus has no endYou can choose what not to believe in
You can deny there’s a heaven above
But once you take a look at Jesus
There’s no denying that God is LoveTell the world that Jesus loves you
Tell them you’ve found a forever friend
You’ve opened up your heart’s door to Him
The love of Jesus has no endIf you want to show you really love Him
If you want to prove that your love is true
Then you’ll obey the word He’s spoken
And do all the things He’s commanded you toTell the world that Jesus loves you
Tell them you’ve found a forever friend
You’ve opened up your heart’s door to Him
The love of Jesus has no endTell the world that Jesus loves you
Tell them you’ve found a forever friend
You’ve opened up your heart’s door to Him
The love of Jesus has no end

Today’s featured song: Psalm 121 (He Will Not Let You Fall) by the Calvary Chapel Worship Community from the 1984 album Psalms Alive 2.
These songs from Tape JM-31 were taken off of (wait for it) … a cassette tape. And, being the frugal person I am, I did not want to waste one inch of tape to leave it blank. So, at some point, the tape on one one side or the other would run out, and what I would do was to record a song that either I already had a copy of, or one that I liked but not so much that it would bother me if it was shortened. That is what this, track 21, represents. However, it really is a good song, and since I did not take it off the radio but added it to this JM tape from the vinyl record album from which it came, I decided to here include the full version (not the one that was cut at the end). (By the way, the fact that I’ve reached 21 tracks on one side of a cassette means that this almost certainly was a 120 minute cassette; most of the tapes I recorded onto were 90 minute cassettes, but a good quality 120 minute tape was very doable.)
This song is also an example of my growing enjoyment of music that was focused on worship and praise. Songs of evangelism, or a clever turn of phrase, or a good tune, these all were still enjoyable to me, but I found that songs like this, and those in the Praise Album series by Maranatha! Music (which long preceded the worship music boom of the 1990s) were much more relaxing and lifting than things by someone who was more pop oriented. At this time in my life, I still enjoyed the pop music of high school and college (by then, they were oldies), although a steady diet of them was eventually wearing to my spirit (it was like having candy to eat all the time; after a while, it got tiresome). The Jesus music featured in many posts on this blog, and for most of what has been on this tape JM-31 so far, was something I could listen to for a longer time, but even this would get old (like having steak all the time). Worship music seemed far more nourishing to my soul, and was ultimately one of the places where I focused my listening as the 1980s wore into the 1990s.
This song is a good example of the worship and praise music that came out of Calvary Chapel during the Jesus music years.
I look up to the mountains
To the hills I turn my eyes
Who will come to help me?
Can I find a place to hide? The One who made the heavens
And the earth will hear my call
The Lord will come to help me
And He will not let me fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fallThe One who watches Israel
Will His vigil keep
Through the burning sunlight
And in the darkness deepConstantly beside you
You need not fear at all
The Lord is there to help you
And He will not let you fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fallSo when you are in danger
And by trouble you are found
And your very soul is threatened by
The evil all aroundIn all of your ways
And in your troubles great and small
Now and ever after
He will not let you fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fallHe will not let you fall
He will not let you fall
He is never weary
And He will not let you fall(repeat)
